Below is a comprehensive list of queer terminology and their definitions. If a word is commonly abbreviated this will be listed next to the word itself in (parentheses). A *​ placed next to a word is used to identify those terms that are, or can be, offensive to some. This dictionary is meant for educational purposes; please be cautious when using any of the starred words and always be respectful of others in your speech.​
A
Agender
- Someone who identifies as having no gender.
Aggressive*
- A term for a "masculine" and dominant lesbian.
Ally
- Someone who is supportive and accepts the LGBT+ community. They support equal civil ​
rights, gender equality, LGBT+ social movements, and challenge homophobia and ​
transphobia. An ally can be heterosexual or a member of the LGBT+ community, however, ​
the term most widely applies to those who identify as "straight and supportive."
- Someone who personally advocates for equal rights and fair treatment.
Androgynous
- Someone who blends the gender lines whether it be in fashion, gender identity, sexual
identity, or sexual lifestyle. Typically, an androgynous person does not fit neatly into the
accepted masculine and feminine gender roles of their society, but rather they exhibit a
combination of masculine and feminine characteristics.
 Aromantic
- Someone who does not experience romantic attraction.
- Someone who has a lack of desire to be in a romantic relationship.
Asexual (Ace)
- Someone who does not experiene sexual attraction.
B
 Baby Dyke*
- A lesbian who blends the labels of butch and femme.
- A young lesbian who has just recently come out.
Bear
- A "traditionally-masculine" gay male.
Beard
- A person of the opposite sex who either, accompanies a homosexual person to an event, or
marries them, so to make it seem as though they are heterosexual.
Bent
- A infrequently used slang term for homosexuals (not straight so bent).
Berdaches*
- An outdated and offensive term for two-spirit individuals.
Bi-Curious
- Someone who has some level of attraction to members of the same sex and is curious to try
physical relations with someone of the same sex.
Bigender
- See (Genderqueer).
Biological Sex
- Whether one is "male" or "female" in terms of the sex organs one is born with.
Biphobia
- The irrational fear of bisexual individuals. This may manifest itself in negative feelings, attitudes,
actions and/or behaviors against the bisexual community.
Biromantic
- Someone who is romantically attracted to both sexes.
Bisexual (Bi)
​ - Someone who is sexually attracted to both sexes. The attraction is not necessarily 50/50.
Boi
​ - A "metrosexual" lesbian who is biologically female and presents themselves in a boyish or
masculine way.
Boston Marriage
​ - A term used, most commonly, to describe two women living together in a platonic relationship.
In the past lesbian women living together were said to have a "Boston Marriage."
Bull Dyke (Bull)*​
- An assertive, "masculine" lesbian.
Butch
- A "masculine" lesbian.
Byke
- A "masculine" bisexual woman often percevied as a lesbian.
C
 Chapstick Lesbian
- A lesbian who's gender identity is in between the traditional images of femme and butch.
Cisgender (Cis)
- Someone who's gender identity matches that of their biological sex organs.
Cisgender Privilege
- The basic rights, privileges and status automatically given to cisgender people, which are
systematically denied to transgender people.
Cissexual
- Someone who feels that they were born in the correct sexed body.
Closet Case
- Someone perceived to be a member of the LGBT+ community who has not identified as one
and is therefore thought to be "stuck in the closet."
