Below is a comprehensive list of queer terminology and their definitions. If a word is commonly abbreviated this will be listed next to the word itself in (parentheses). A *​ placed next to a word is used to identify those terms that are, or can be, offensive to some. This dictionary is meant for educational purposes; please be cautious when using any of the starred words and always be respectful of others in your speech.​

Tranny*
- A derogatory term for a transgender individual.
- A term reclaimed by some of the transgender community and used as an identifier.
Transgender (Trans*)
- An umbrella term referring to any individual whose self-identity, behavior, and/or anatomy fall
outside of societal gender norms and/or expectations.
- A term for an individual whose gender identity does match their biological sex.
Transition
- The process of changing one's gender presentation permanently to reflect that of the
individual's internal sense of gender. For transsexual individuals this typically also involves
sex reassignment theraphy (hormone replacemenet therapy and sex reassignment surgery).
Transman
- An individual who was born biologically female and identifies as a male.
Transphobia
- The irrational fear of transgender individuals. This may manifest itself in negative feelings,
attitudes, actions and/or behaviors against the trans* community.
Transsexual/Transexual
- The medical term for a person who has changed their physical gender to match their internal
sense of gender.
Transvestite
- Someone who wears clothes stereotypically worn by the gender opposite their own.
Transwoman
- An individual who was born biologically male and identifies as a female.
Third Gender/Third Sex
- An individual who is categorized (by their will or by social consensus) as neither a man nor a
woman.
- A social category present in those societies who recognize three or more genders.
Turn Someone*
- The concept that a homosexual, bisexual, or pansexual individual can "make" a heterosexual
individual change their sexual orientation.
